FP7 Health Call 2012 - in brief...

The Enterprise Europe Network hosted a heads-up information day recently on the upcoming FP7 Health 2012 Call. Anticipated publication date of the final version is July 2011. A draft version is available on the Cordis website http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/health/

From the information day, the programme is looking increasingly for SME involvement with project criteria specifying minimum % contributions that must go to SME partners. We heard from a local microSME - The Medical Device Company - that it is working with Austrian clinicians on a FP7-funded project. Historically, and compared with other EU states, UK SMEs have been relatively poor at winning FP7 funding -  maybe application rates are low?

You probably/possibly don't want to read the whole draft orientation paper, so the key themes to attract your interest are:

  • Detection and diagnosis of disease - rare diseases; infectious diseases; diseases of ageing, e.g., digestive and joint chronic inflammation.
  • Large-scale data-gathering and processing - patient stratification/personalised medicine; systems medicine addressing clinical needs; multifactorial disease and co-morbidities .
  • Innovative therapeutic approaches and interventions - organ transplantation and bioartificial organs; targeted nucleic acid delivery for therapeutic and prophylactic use; orphan drugs for rare diseases - preclinical and clinical studies; clinical studies in type I diabetes; technology approaches in sensory-impairment; prevention and treatment in infectious disease co-morbidities; translation of stem cell-based therapies.
  • Healthcare systems and public health, including health technology assessments.

A pared down document summarising the DRAFT technical aspects (taken from the orientation paper on the Cordis site) is here: FP7 Health 2012. You can read the full titles in two pages, and click through to a couple of paragraphs more information. If you're interested at that stage, you should look at the draft orientation paper to get an idea about eligibility and funding.
