NHSGG&C tops the league for cleanliness

27 July 2010

Scotland's biggest health board has more cleanliness champions than ever within its workforce.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) now has 2070 staff who have successfully completed the Cleanliness Champions Programme and are spearheading work which has led to the lowest infection figures since records began.

As of June this year 2070 staff had finished their training, and Sandra McNamee, NHSGGC's Assistant Director of Nursing, Infection Control, said:

"This is a significant achievement for NHSGGC and I would like to pay tribute to the support and efforts of local infection control teams who have been crucial in reaching this significant achievement.

"Staff who have completed this programme are demonstrating a commitment to patient safety and to the prevention and control of infection."

The aim of the scheme is to have a "champion" in each clinical area who will be responsible for informing colleagues about best practice around infection control measures.

Training is delivered online or staff can contact their site Infection Control team for more information on local educational sessions.

The programme covers a range of infection control topics including Hand Hygiene, Standard Precautions and Decontamination of Equipment and the Environment.
