The University of Paisley's School of Health, Nursing & Midwifery (http://www.paisley.ac.uk/hnm/index.asp) was formed by the amalgamation of the Colleges of Nursing and Midwifery in Argyll & Clyde and Ayrshire & Arran. These were based within the Health Service and joined the University in 1996.
The School offers pre-registration preparation at Higher Education Diploma and Degree level in Adult Nursing, Mental Health Nursing and Midwifery with over 1,000 full-time students.
In addition, it provides post-basic courses up to Masters level in Nursing, Midwifery and related topics.
Increasingly, Open/Distance Learning approaches to provision are used which are very popular. A wide range of options are tailored to meet the needs of carers. The Midwifery Directorate was the first University Department to recieve a Cetificate of Commitment for a UNICEF baby friendly award. Particular developments within the Nursing School relate to Palliative Care, Community Care, Care of the Older Person, the use of Psychosocial and Psychotherapeutic Interventions and Unscheduled Care.
