SME Toolbox: IP Searching for Life Sciences
The purpose of this workshop is to provide an insight into intellectual property (with a particular focus on life science IP issues) and the use of the online patent search engines.
Presented by Richard Gibbs of Marks & Clerk, the workshop will be split into two sessions, the first session taking the form of a seminar introducing some of the key aspects of the patent process and important points to consider when seeking protection for new innovations. The second session focuses on patent searching.
Being able to quickly and effectively search for patents relevant to a specific invention or technology is an important and valuable skill and there are many advantages to being able to conduct a quick an effective search; these include, for example, monitoring the activity of competitors, identifying relevant prior art and problem solving. Furthermore, and perhaps most importantly, its free! This part of the workshop will use a series of online tutorials to guide participants through the various patent databases and will teach the core aspects of effective searching.
In addition, the workshop will show you how to check up on the progress of a particular European or US patent application - again, skills useful for those wanting to closely monitor their patent portfolios or those of competitors.
