Science Scotland 2010

"Science is vital for Scotland's future.  It is a keystone in delivering the Government's purpose of creating a more successful Scotland with opportunities for all to flourish through increasing economic growth."   Science for Scotland, The Scottish Government

Following the publication of Science for Scotland last year, this conference will explore how to promote the development of the scientific sector to reflect the changing needs of the science base.  Covering issues including links between  government strategy and the scientific sector, how to improve the teaching and learning of science and the importance of promoting science to a broader audience, this event will highlight recent developments and initiatives which are helping to secure Scotland's scientific and economic future.

A key aim for the scientific sector in Scotland is for education and industry is to work much more closely with each other.  In times of reducing funding and support, institutions are developing their own networks and partnerships in order to move forward.  This event will highlight some of these partnerships in action, looking at why they are needed, what they can achieve and how businesses, schools and academia can work together to achieve common goals.

The conference will also examine the recent discussion of government funding for science as speakers explore the potential impact of prioritising research work linked to expected economic gain and moves by the Scottish Government to improve science education in schools and onwards.

Key themes will include:

  • Linking scientific research and government strategy
  • Funding routes for research and development
  • Improving science teaching and education
  • Increasing shared learning between industry, schools and academia
  • Improving the status and image of science
