SME Toolbox: Extracting Value from Intellectual Property

Biocity Scotland logo

While there is widespread recognition that investing in innovation is important, and that intellectual property (IP) is a key part of that investment, it is often overlooked that managing IP in the context of business ambition is essential to ensuring long-term success.

In this lunchtime seminar hosted by Nexxus and Biocity Scotland, Russell Thom, Director:Patents with Murgitroyd & Company will lead a discussion not on how you create an IP portfolio, but on why IP rights might be important, and the way in which they can be used. This will be followed by a discussion, led by Euan Mckenzie an Account Executive at Central Insurance Services Ltd, on the availability, cost and value of arranging specialist IP insurance which can provide the buyer with a "war chest" to assist in the pursuit of infringers, defence of alleged infringement and the costs of resolving contractual disputes.

Some companies are so focused on acquiring IP protection they forget the reasons for trying to obtain the rights - a business plan is typically more than just trying to protect inventions, trademarks, designs, or copyright. Companies aim to commercialize inventions as products and services, market their brands, license their know-how, and conclude joint ventures and other contractual agreements. All benefit from effective monitoring and enforcement of intellectual property rights: IP must be viewed as a collection of key assets that add significant value to the company.

Following the seminar, there is a chance to view the Biocity Scotland site.
