The Annual Nexxus West of Scotland Life Science Awards have grown in stature year on year as evidenced by this year's keynote speaker Laura Gordon, Director of the Glasgow:Edinburgh Collaboration who acknowledged the evening as ‘one of the greatest events in the calendar of the Life Science industry.' This year's fourth annual Awards event which took place in the stunning surroundings of the Auditorium in Oran Mor, Glasgow on 12 November 2008 and which was attended by 130 representatives of the life science community including academia, industry, the NHS and support services, was no exception.
Chris Packard, Chair of the Nexxus Steering Group said, "In these challenging times it is recognised that for many there will be testing days ahead but we hope that in a small way, through facilitating networking and the sharing of knowledge and experience, Nexxus will play a role in building an even stronger base for the future development of life science in Scotland."
Laura Gordon in her speech said, "The significance of the life science industry to the economy has become even more important in recent months with the downturn in the financial services and construction sectors - and now, more than ever, it is our strong knowledge economy, fuelled by the life science sector to which we turn.
"Competition is fierce - all around the world countries are competing for world class excellence, and emerging countries such as China and India are rolling out hundreds of thousands of graduates in high value disciplines. We cannot afford to be complacent. There has never been a more important time for industry collaboration.
"As these awards have showcased however, our native talent is more than capable of competing on a global level."
